Artist Statement

A master sculptor, experimenter and innovator, working with a wide range of sculptural materials, Steinsieck pushes the limits of content and emotional engagement. His unique work is imbued by both the fantastic and the humanistic. Challenging, unexpected and original it remains grounded and connected to the narrative primal traditions of form. Pulsing with rhythm and energy, the improvisational elements of his sculpture reach the imagination of the viewer, seeking to achieve a poetic integrity where form and idea emerge and surprise with spacious multilayered meanings. From Newton MA, Steinsieck began his college education in pre-med, following in the footsteps of his father, a distinguished surgeon. An elective course in basic design inspired him to change direction. He pursued sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design where as a senior he won the annual Royal Academy of Arts award for most outstanding student. Steinsieck obtained his MFA at Maryland Institute College of Art, followed by his Ed.D. from Columbia University.
