NEW MEMBER SHOW 2021 AWARDS
FIRST PRIZE
Music by Alfred De Angelo, Oil on Canvas-Triptych
Reminiscent of a classic renaissance altarpiece in its dimensions, this triptych is alive with movement. The trees in the side panels dance to the music of the disembodied musician. The creation of the music is so passionate that it is causing the violin to self-destruct. The vibrant and swirling shapes create a vibrating composition, full of color and energy; this painting is arresting.SECOND PRIZE
Cuarto Con Vista by Isobel Del Biondo, Oil
The artist perfectly captured the sunlit beach, the calm ocean and one can almost feel the gentle breeze from the water. The structure of the architecture perfectly frames the view from this refuge, creating a sense of order and solitude. The slanting sunlight and inviting chair speaks to a quiet afternoon’s rest, and after this year, all we want to do is be in this room and look out at that view.
THIRD PRIZE
For Breonna by Madeleine Delpha, Embroidery on Muslin
This captivating portrait spoke to us both in its direct and engaging likeness and in its creative use of a traditional medium. The skill of the embroidery has created a portrait with expression and warmth as well as an intriguing texture and dimension. The use of this age-old method to tell an important new story is both intimate and innovative.
HONORABLE MENTION
Laugh and Be Comical by Calvin Mamis, Gelli Print, Oil Pastel
The title of this image is a lie. The artist has deliberately asked us to question whether this is the face of humor or tragedy. Bright and playful color invites us in, but upon closer look, there is a haunted expression, and the emotion is ambiguous, as is the side long look from under a partially concealing hood. What are they hiding from us?
HONORABLE MENTION
Conversation Continues by Sylvia Fishman, Acrylic on Canvas
The artist has captured both the likeness and the connection between child and parent with a loose and painterly style. The curious expression in the eyes of the child is described by a few simple and fluid marks of pale pinks and violets creating the guileless stare of the young. The painting conveys a vitality combined with warmth and intimacy.
HONORABLE MENTION
The Passing Storm by Hilary Hanson Bruel, Encaustic, Mixed Media
The longer we looked at this the further the space receded. At first, we were drawn to the texture of the surface, which even in the photograph is compelling.
Hatch marks, thread and the unique surface of the encaustic draw you in but stepping back the sea, sky and atmosphere emerge to create a calm and reflecting vista. The cool blues and whites add to the sense of sea and sky endlessly reflecting on another.
