Artist Statement
My art is inspired by relationships of all kinds. I use whimsy and humor to tell stories of life, love, loss, and hope. I’m inspired by my own experiences, those of others, and my imagination. There’s a lot of symbolism in my work which can make for fun treasure hunt. I prefer my messages to be subtle, to inspire questions, and provoke thoughts.
Ideas come to me while I’m exercising, listening to music, or in the middle of the night. I start with a vision and see where it takes me. When I get lost in my art it helps me find clarity. It’s personal, intimate, and vulnerable.
My most satisfying work comes from a sense of spontaneity and surprise. Often even I don’t know how the story will unfold.
I combine traditional mosaic materials such as stained glass, tiles, and ceramics with found objects, paper collage, buttons, beads, and more. It’s always a thrill when the right object appears.
My recent mosaics give life and personality to the things we wear. Shoes and handbags stand in for people and depict our individual stories. I welcome the opportunity for custom design, to learn about clients, and to help tell their stories.
I was once told that I needed more angst in my work, but my journey is through color, beauty, harmony, and fun! (And always some blood, sweat, and tears).
