Artist Statement

“I create art as an extension of who I am — a declaration of presence and a reflection of the way I experience the world. My work centers on the human figure, where I explore the interplay between observation and abstraction. I am continually drawn to the complexity, movement, and expressive potential of the body. Through drawing and painting, I seek to capture the essence of gesture, emotion, and identity. By blending representation with abstraction, my work explores the space between what is seen and what is felt — the place where observation meets imagination. My intention is to create work that invites viewers to engage visually and emotionally, discovering something unexpected and authentic in the experience.” ——————————————————————————————————— Joy George is a figurative artist based on Cape Cod whose work explores the expressive possibilities of the human form through drawing and painting. Her work reflects a lifelong engagement with the visual arts and a continuing exploration of the human figure as a source of structure, movement, and emotional resonance. She studied Architecture and Fine Arts at the University of Houston, earning her BFA, and later received her MFA in Figurative Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She also studied Communications Design at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School and holds an MA in Psychology from Lesley University in Cambridge. George continues to deepen her practice through ongoing study with mentor Martin Campos of Philadelphia. In addition to her work as a visual artist, she is the owner and principal teacher of Joe’s Place–True Pilates, a studio she has operated successfully on Cape Cod for more than twenty-five years. She also practiced as an orthopedic massage therapist for three decades. Her extensive knowledge of anatomy and human movement strongly informs her figurative work, contributing to the dynamic sense of gesture and structure that characterizes her drawings and paintings.
