SUMMARY:Demo by James C. Varnum\, Multi-Media
DESCRIPTION:I was a creative child who liked to sit at the dining room table and draw. I took art classes at the local library during the summer in the small\, rural village where I grew up\, in Southern New Hampshire. After high school I studied art in Boston and San Francisco\, where I earned a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. \nI soon learned that I could not support myself and a new family as a fine artist\, so I went into education\, earned a M.Ed. and became a classroom teacher. After nine years\, I wanted to specialize my work with children. I earned a M.S. in communication disorders and worked as a Speech Language Pathologist before retiring in 2011. During those thirty-plus years I kept in touch with my creative side by taking art classes through various continuing education organizations. \nUpon retiring\, I promised myself that I would pursue art once again. I kept that promise and am an active artist in Newton. I am the past president and current exhibitions chairperson of the Newton Art Association and take classes at the New Art Center. I belong to several other art associations and actively exhibit my paintings. I classify myself as an experimental watercolor painter. \n\nZoom Details: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89954069480?pwd=UVloMFlnbmJ0Uy9IYnJJZDE3anBxUT09\n\n\n\nNewton AA is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.\n\nTopic: James C. SUMMARY:Maureen Nathan\, Mark Making/Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Maureen Nathan a contemporary British artist with a big commitment to drawing as a daily practice. Many drawings are done with India ink using a chopstick or brush\, which gives a fluidity and looseness to the images. Sometimes she uses paint\, pastel or chalk to add color and texture. Collages begin with a thought or memory to get started\, followed by free thinking and sticking! \nHer inspiration comes from memory and the world around her. \nThis is an interactive demo for those who want to participate. \nFrom Maureen:\nPeople will need any drawing material they are comfortable with such as pencil\, charcoal\, ink etc together with one or two coloured pencils\, pastels or paints. \nPaper size shouldn’t be any smaller than A4 (8.5 x 11” approx. US). I recommend standing up to draw generally and suggest larger paper because of that. In the UK I would recommend A3 (11 x 17 approx. US) as the best size but am not sure if it’s the same in the states! \nIn addition to that any small object that fits in the palm of the hand is good. Here are some of the possible items: \n \nZoom Details:\nTopic: Maureen Nathan\, Mark Making/Drawing\nTime: Mar 12\, 2023 02:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88646607965?pwd=aE9SWTFUb0Qvb2hxNVI1OHV0S3FUQT09\nMeeting ID: 886 4660 7965\nPasscode: 685892 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/keGcyyzBVn

SUMMARY:From the Heart Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Reception date: February 2\, 2023 from 5:30-7:30pm \nMosesian Center for the Arts is very excited to welcome Newton Art Association for our winter exhibition. Both organizations\, Newton Arts and Mosesian Arts\, have partnered in the past and this time member artists of Newton Art Association as well as non-members have submitted work exploring creativity\, inclusion\, and unity. The work in the upcoming exhibit is inspired by Maya Angelou’s wise words: “All great artists draw from the same resource: the human heart\, which tells us that we are more alike than we are unalike.” Using those words\, artists have examined ideas that range from personal heartbreaks and joys to more universal concepts of inclusivity\, cooperation\, unity\, and creativity. \nIn Sharon Whitham’s monotype “Rainbow Arch\,” the artist uses stone imagery to represent diversity\, strength\, balance\, and history. The arch is formed by oval shapes reminiscent of rocks that exist in a state of delicate balance. All the diverse elements\, as the artists puts it\, are unified to create a bridge or a path that “needs the many of all kinds to make the structure work.” \nPat McSweeney’s joomchi piece “Dream of Spring\,” made of mulberry paper\, is intended to evoke the longing for spring’s reawakening. The intricate design and the soft blues and greens conjure images of renewal\, of waking flora and a gentle spring breeze. The work brings joy\, and its message of hope and regeneration is universally understood. \nIn Bonnie Lerner’s “Women Waiting\,” the women are united in their sadness. The artist thinks of them as mothers waiting for their children to come home in a war-torn country\, or perhaps they are estranged from their loved ones waiting for a reunion. The act of waiting\, often associated with women\, and the act of mourning are deeply rooted in women’s psyche. These common themes unite the figures and are easily comprehended across all boarders and cultures. \n“Empty Nest\,” a fiber piece by artist Irina Moroz\, touches on the well understood idea of an ever-changing life and its stages. When children grow up and leave their childhood home\, when friends move away\, or when relatives pass on\, we are left with a complex ball of emotions – from the feelings of emptiness to perhaps some regrets. However\, at the end\, we learn to embrace the changes and cherish the memories of a life well lived. \nDownload Press Release (PDF) \nFor artists who are in this show: \nDrop-off for art: January 14\, 12-2 pm / January 17\, 10:30am-4pm\nPick-up for art: March 11\, 10-12am / March 14\, 10:30am – 4pm

SUMMARY:Soon Y Warren\, Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:The demo will show the process of how I paint the crystal painting. The demonstrations shows how I apply the colors layer by layer and show the finish painting \nArtist Statement:\nCreating painting is what I want to do with my life\, and I treasure my life painting every moment. When I paint\, my life becomes full; time flies; my mind is in Zen; most of all\, I am happy. Painting realism has always been my passion and blessing. Moreover\, expanding and opening my eyes and heart for my artistic horizon to learn and absorb to improve myself is always an ongoing process. When I create with various subject matter that touches my heart\, I plunge myself into rich and brilliant colors and my intuitive composition within the picture plane. I want to create each subject matter with feelings of raw emotion with movement of brush strokes\, shapes or colors within painting that flows into space\, fierce or even calm and still. The passion I see in my painting and feel it\, I feel I am alive! SUMMARY:Anton Nowels\, oil\, Contemporary Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:In this demo\, award-winning artist Anton Nowels will demonstrate how he uses abstraction and impressionism in painting. He is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society\, and he recently won an award in Landscape Painting at the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition at the Steamboat Art Museum. Nowels teaches painting at Scottsdale Artists’ School\, Winslow Art Center\, and Tubac School of Fine Art. This year he participated in the Brinton Museum’s Residency program in Big Horn\, Wyoming. SUMMARY:Garland of Hours\, Gage Opdenbrouw\, oil
DESCRIPTION:“For many years now\, I have found old family photos\, from my family\, as well as found photos\, to be poignant and moving source material for a body of paintings I call ‘Garland of Hours’” says Gage Opdenbrouw. “The paintings are often torn apart and rebuilt\, destroyed\, and reconstructed again and again\, in the course\, of their development—a process analogous to both the passing of time and our experience of memory.” \nUltimately the paintings are intended as meditations on themes like time\, remembrance\, forgetting\, love\, loss\, impermanence\, attachment\, and letting go—a reflection on mortality and the passing of days\, distilled into paint. \nThis demo will provide an overview of the work and an opportunity to look over the artist’s shoulder as he works on a canvas or two from this body of work. \nAbout Gage Opdenbrouw \nBorn and raised in Northern California\, Gage Opdenbrouw is an award-winning painter\, who\, until recent times\, traveled frequently to paint and teach.  He now teaches online courses at Washington Studio School\, in Washington DC\, and Winslow Art Center. \nOpdenbrouw’s two person exhibition\, “The Underside of Flowers” is on view now at SHOH Gallery in Berkeley\, CA\, as well as his solo show “West County Light” at Horse and Plow Taproom\, in Sonoma county\, where the artist currently resides. \nOther recent exhibitions include Black Spring\, also at Horse and Plow\,  a solo show at B Sakata Garo Gallery in Sacramento\,  Midsummer Sun in an Empty Room at SHOH Gallery in Berkeley\, and Silent Music at Washington Studio Schoo in Washington DC. \nHis work was included in John Seed’s 2019 book “Disrupted Realism”\, and will be represented in a set of forthcoming prints from “Disrupted Realism” artists\, published by Sebastian Foster this fall.  He was the recipient\, in 2019\, of the Avigdor Arikha Fellowship for a residency in Civita Castellana Italy with the Jerusalem Studio School. \nWhen he is not teaching\, painting\, or playing music\, he is out on the fire roads and dirt trails of the coastal mountains with his partner\, writer and naturalist\, Kelly Gray\, their dogs\, and a wonderful small human\, watching the sun illuminate the fog as it touches the redwoods\, taking it all in. \nZoom Details: \n https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89812069236?pwd=QjBnclFRbWw1KzVwQ2dMWEVxbTVtZz09\nNewton AA is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Garland of Hours\, Gage Opdenbrouw\, oil\nTime: Oct 13\, 2022 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89812069236?pwd=QjBnclFRbWw1KzVwQ2dMWEVxbTVtZz09 \nMeeting ID: 898 1206 9236\nPasscode: 658853\nOne tap mobile\n+16469313860\,\,89812069236#\,\,\,\,*658853# US\n+13017158592\,\,89812069236#\,\,\,\,*658853# US (Washington DC) \nMeeting ID: 898 1206 9236\nPasscode: 658853\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/knJuA2baF

SUMMARY:Demo with Betsy Silverman | Collage
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM LINK:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89460307355?pwd=Y2htUCtheDJja0RIUHB2RXdGYTIrQT09 \nMeeting ID: 894 6030 7355\nPasscode: 989057 \nCollage artist Betsy Silverman works in a style she calls Fragmented Realism. Her primary materials are discarded magazines. She selects\, cuts\, and glues old images and text to create multidimensional portraits\, still lifes\, cityscapes\, and representations of New England – especially the Boston area. She delights in the challenge of fashioning a new image while preserving bits of the former representations including their individual memories and histories. Betsy chooses each recycled paper remnant for its hue\, value\, saturation\, image content\, and textual relationship to the subjects of her work. \nA graduate of Cornell University\, Betsy holds a master of architecture degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work reflects an architectural sensibility employing perspective\, light and shadow\, reflections\, and scale. Learn more on Silverman’s website or on Instagram @betsysilvermancollage. \n  \nBoston Coffee\, 30 x 40 in.\n  \n  \n  \nBoston Moves\, 36 x 48 in.
