She’ll share what she loves most about monotype printing and walk through the inks\, papers\, and materials she uses—including oil-based\, water-soluble inks with simple soap-and-water clean-up. \nLynda creates her work using a combination of natural and found objects. She has exhibited widely throughout New England\, with work held in corporate\, private\, and nonprofit collections in the U.S. and abroad. Along her journey through life and her pathway through art\, she has succeeded in reaching her biggest and most challenging goal of all\, by achieving signature status in both the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. She still has to pinch herself\, when she thinks about that! She has earned some other signature memberships in other watercolor societies\, found galleries to represent her work\, and she has won some nice awards for her paintings … but she thinks it is kind of boring and bragging to read a list of them. Instead she wants to let her work speak for itself. And she will speak for herself too\, when she meets with you in February. She is looking forward to seeing you then! \nDESIGN & PAINT A VIGNETTE! \nDon’t we love the look of a pristine\, sparkling\, white sheet of watercolor paper? A vignette is a painting that does not fill every square inch of our paper. It leaves some areas\, usually in the corners\, unpainted\, and we can celebrate our beautiful watercolor paper by leaving it revealed in this way. \nAlexis is a watercolor painter\, but this subject\, and the principles behind it\, can be utilized by ALL painters\, using ALL media! \nIn this demo\, you will see Alexis create an image\, which ties into the edges of the paper\, seamlessly interlocking with untouched sections of white paper near the corners and the borders. Choosing a vignette format can be a clever way to deal with certain problematic subjects\, and it can result in paintings which are even more captivating and dynamic than paintings which fill up the complete rectangle. Creating a successful vignette depends on substantial principles\, thoughtful designing\, and inventive use of values\, colors\, and edges. Alexis will give you valuable instruction\, lots of great ideas\, and plenty of inspiration\, as to how to use this format. \nHere are some example of vignettes. We will begin with an assessment of my reference photo and then move on to color mixing and critiquing the palette followed by brush technique\, laying the paint in on top of the dark ground. DESCRIPTION:DEMO: Deborah Drummond – Printing with a Gel Plate\nJanuary  15@ 7-9pm\nGel plate printing is a low cost and accessible monotype printing process resulting in unique and unexpected effects on papers for collage\, bookmaking\, journaling and mixed media.\nIn this demo\, Deborah will show some of the myriad of ways she employs this mono printing process using water-based paints\, papers and a variety of tools and materials which produce exciting overlays of color and patterns.\nTechniques such as using stencils\, image transfer and mark-making will be discussed\, leading to how she uses these and other found and painted papers in her process for collage work.\nDeborah Drummond is an artist with professional background in illustration and design. A brief description of materials will be given including the support\, color palette\, brushers\, solvents and medium used. Working quickly\, the artist will demonstrate how to interpret the photo onto the canvas\, develop a dynamic composition and create an underpainting. Finalizing the landscape through the use of color\, light and dark values to capture a naturalistic sense of light\, atmosphere\, and depth. \nAward winning artist Michael Compton was born in Portland Oregon in 1949. He studied art and graphic design at Colorado State University and The Minneapolis College of Art & Design. His paintings can be found in numerous corporate and individual collections. Michael has a studio in Somerville Massachusetts and his current interest and emphasis is on his plein air work with appearances at Plein air Easton\, Cape Ann Plein Air and En Plein Air Texas. She composes natural forms together for their shape\, color and texture from direct observation and her imagination. She wants to interpret the beauty of light on natural forms and hopes to provide her viewers with a moment of quiet reflection. \nHer painting process begins with a bold underpainting that defines a composition of light and shadow. With close observation she adds layers of color to build texture and detail. She loves the quiet process of seeing the details slowly emerge in her paintings. \nDonna Calleja retired a few years ago from a rewarding career teaching art to high school students. She now loves teaching private adult painting classes and having more time to paint. Her paintings have been on display in recent shows at Nahcotta\, Concord Art\, E. DESCRIPTION:DEMO: Alexis Lavine\, Watercolor\nNovember 14@ 7-9pm \n					\n									ZOOM LINK\n					 \nAlexis Lavine usually paints on traditional watercolor paper. She also works on a variety of alternative\, non-traditional surfaces to take advantage of different qualities that they can offer for specific subjects. Gesso coated watercolor paper is a favorite alternate. It has similarities to Yupo\, but is less capricious. It’s a “happy medium” between Yupo and cold-pressed paper and is a great surface for watercolor! In her demo\, Alexis will tell and show how easy it is to prepare your paper\, and how she works with this surface. She has a terrific camera set-up. She earned a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University in its acclaimed Art as Applied to Medicine program. She worked as a medical illustrator for several years – and then found herself living in the beautiful\, isolated mountains of western Maryland\, too far away from a medical school or a medical publisher to practice her trade. So she picked up her brushes and her watercolors and started painting the magnificent landscape that surrounded her – and she hasn’t looked back since. \nAlexis paints exclusively with watercolor\, occasionally ”en plein air\,” but more frequently in her studio\, where she constructs paintings which are thoughtfully designed\, carefully drawn\, and sensitively painted. She is also an enthusiastic art instructor\, who teaches painting and drawing classes and workshops. \nAlexis has lived in Greensboro\, North Carolina since 2002. Honored as “One to Watch” by Watercolor Artist Magazine\, her paintings have been published in Splash\, The Artistic Touch\, The Best of Watercolor\, and Watercolor Artist. I took art classes at the local library during the summer in the small\, rural village where I grew up\, in Southern New Hampshire. After high school I studied art in Boston and San Francisco\, where I earned a B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. \nI soon learned that I could not support myself and a new family as a fine artist\, so I went into education\, earned a M.Ed. and became a classroom teacher. After nine years\, I wanted to specialize my work with children. I earned a M.S. in communication disorders and worked as a Speech Language Pathologist before retiring in 2011. During those thirty-plus years I kept in touch with my creative side by taking art classes through various continuing education organizations. \nUpon retiring\, I promised myself that I would pursue art once again. SUMMARY:Anton Nowels\, oil\, Contemporary Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:In this demo\, award-winning artist Anton Nowels will demonstrate how he uses abstraction and impressionism in painting. Nowels uses an experimental approach to color developed by Josef Albers that allows for a great range of color choice. This demo aims to give artists more freedom in design and color. \nNowels’s work has been exhibited on a national level. He is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society\, and he recently won an award in Landscape Painting at the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition at the Steamboat Art Museum. Nowels teaches painting at Scottsdale Artists’ School\, Winslow Art Center\, and Tubac School of Fine Art. This year he participated in the Brinton Museum’s Residency program in Big Horn\, Wyoming. Nowels’s work is represented by the Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum in Mt. Carmel\, Utah. \n

With multiple angles of view\, they provide interesting double narrative potentials\, contrasting viewpoints\, or yin and yang\, if you will. \nViewers enjoy the visual movement of flag books. They beg the viewer to play and to keep interacting with the artwork. They’re excellent for creative poetry\, wish lists\, sweet nothings\, photographs\, abstract designs\, and more. \nThis online workshop will cover the basic book arts skills needed to create these exciting moveable books. SUMMARY:Garland of Hours\, Gage Opdenbrouw\, oil

DESCRIPTION:This fun and informative demo features printmaker and book artist Stephanie Stigliano. This will be an interactive demo. She will show us how to make easy sample structures in paper. These three-dimensional forms fold flat for storage. You can adapt them for cards\, books\, or ornaments. She will also show you examples of how she uses similar forms in her artwork. Stigliano has been teaching book arts and printmaking since 1988. The supply list is below. \nIf you don’t have any supplies you are welcome to watch and be inspired! \nStephanie Stigliano is experienced in teaching book arts and printmaking in-person and online to students of all ages. Her prints and artist’s books are included in the collections of the Fogg Museum and the Houghton Library of Harvard University\, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts\, the National Museum for Women in the Arts\, and the Book Art Museum of Łodz\, Poland. \nShe is a professor at Boston College where she teaches Making Prints/Making Books. She\ntaught Printmaking and Books as Art at Walnut Hill School for the Arts from 2007-2021. She taught at Art New England for several years and Internationally\, \nStigliano initiated a print project between students of Walnut Hill School for the Arts and The Technical College of Reykjavik. She taught a workshop to the women’s artist collective of Hurumzi Henna Art Gallery in Stonetown\, Zanzibar. In Krakow\, Poland\, she contributed to a print portfolio at The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts. She exhibited her prints at Íslensk Grafík\, Reykjavik\, Iceland. Her primary materials are discarded magazines. SUMMARY:Demo with Marjorie Kaye | Sculptural Painting
DESCRIPTION:Marjorie Kaye has lived in the Boston area for most of her life\, with stops along the way in Syracuse\, NY to earn her BFA in Painting\, as well as New York City in the 80s. \nShe is a painter and sculptor.  Her work has been an exploration of opposites: form and color; organic and geometric; precision and chaos. Colorful and bold\, her gouache paintings and sculptures are kinetic and energetic.  Her work has been reviewed in many publications including the Boston Globe and ArtScope Magazine and has been shown extensively both locally and nationally\, including galleries such as Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, Atlantic Works Gallery in East Boston\, Harbor Gallery\, UMass Boston\, and the Walter Wickiser Gallery in NYC. She was a 2016 winner of the Lillian Orlowsky/William Freed Foundation Grant from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and was included in a group exhibition in their galleries. Also\, Ms. Kaye was named a finalist in the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Awards in Painting. \nKaye is the founder of Galatea Fine Art in Boston\, MA\, a large artist-run gallery featuring over 39 artists from Boston and beyond.  She was the director of that space from 2009 – 2017\, as well as the owner.  The gallery has transitioned into a non-profit and Ms. Kaye is remaining as Director.
