PD: Jane Carney – The Art of Hanging Art
In this presentation, we will explore the practical and conceptual considerations behind hanging an exhibition – from piece selection and placement to designing viewer experience. The presentation will review common exhibition types (solo / group shows) and offer practical advice for planning and installation. We will alsc raise critical questions about curatorial authority. Is there really a “correct” way to hang a show?
As an art consultant at Boston Art, Jane approaches curating with a holistic method informed by awareness of contemporary context as well as the values of her clients. Jane has executed a wide variety of projects, ranging from sensitive healthcare curation to large-scale corporate renovations, to private clientele seeking to cultivate eclectic and personal collections. Prior to joining Boston Art, Jane graduated from Sotheby’s Institute of Art with a Master’s Degree in Art Business with a specialization in Contemporary Art. She then worked for Christie’s Auction House in the Impressionist and Modern Art and later as a Cataloguer for 20th Century Design. While earning her undergraduate degree at Simmons University, Jane worked with a variety of Boston art institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Ballet, and Fidelity’s Corporate Art Group.
