Artist statement:
I work mostly with landscapes. While the pieces are fairly realistic, I usually do not try to duplicate the scenes depicted or the reference photos that I use. I manipulate the composition and try to reduce the visual elements to only what is necessary to get across the feeling or idea that I want to convey. I also try to be aware of design possibilities suggested by the scene, such as patterns of negative space created by trees. I focus on abstract patterns of shadow, light, and color. I use exaggeration or distortion of color as a device to build energy and add atmosphere. By using this slight abstraction and distortion, while also maintaining a sense of veracity, I try to create a sense of visual excitement, harmony, light, and a touch of mystery.
